Bahrain boycotts Oman ministerial meeting on Strait of Hormuz security
Bahrain has officially announced its boycott of a proposed ministerial meeting in Oman regarding the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting, which includes Iranian participation, is being bypassed by Manama until full diplomatic relations are restored between Bahrain and Iran.
The Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that its decision does not diminish its respect for Oman’s diplomatic efforts but emphasizes that meaningful dialogue cannot ignore current security realities. Bahrain cited previous attacks on its own infrastructure, including a near-disastrous incident involving an ammonia tank, as well as the recent targeting of an oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia, as evidence of ongoing threats.
Bahrain has outlined four essential pillars for sustainable peace in the region: the immediate cessation of all hostilities, international responsibility and compensation for damages, respect for state sovereignty, and the legal settlement of disputes. Furthermore, Bahrain maintains that any maritime arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz must adhere to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and be overseen by the International Maritime Organization to ensure freedom of navigation for all vessels without discrimination.
