Baia Mare man suspected of attempting to blow up apartment building

A 59-year-old man in Baia Mare, Romania, is under investigation after allegedly attempting to cause an explosion in an apartment block on Motorului Street. On Sunday afternoon, emergency services responded to a fire in a residence where the owner exhibited suspicious behavior.

Following the fire, gendarmes and fire officials inspected the property and discovered multiple fire outbreaks in two separate rooms. According to the Maramureș Gendarmerie, witness statements suggest the man intentionally set fire to the home and left the gas running in an attempt to trigger an explosion that would affect the entire building.

Gendarmes secured the perimeter to protect residents and immobilized the suspect. He was subsequently taken to the police station for further investigation and legal measures. Authorities stated that the prompt intervention helped manage a situation that could have endangered the lives of many residents.
