Bailundo King faces criticism over MPLA conference attendance

The participation of the King of Bailundo, Tchongolola Tchongonga Ekuikui VI, in the 14th Ordinary Provincial Conference of the MPLA in Huambo has drawn criticism from politicians, activists, and civil society members. Critics argue that the presence of traditional authorities at a partisan event threatens the perceived neutrality and independence of these institutions.

National Assembly Deputy Nuno Álvaro Dala suggested that the King's involvement could lead to the instrumentalization of ancestral authorities by the ruling party. Similarly, activists and members of the Liberal Party expressed concerns that political affiliations could compromise the ability of traditional leaders to act as impartial mediators in community conflicts.

Previously, the Royal Court of Bailundo had denied supporting specific political candidacies, asserting that the Kingdom is a cultural entity rather than a political institution, and urged political actors to avoid using traditional authorities for partisan purposes.
