Baćin commemorates 35th anniversary of mass civilian killings
Commemorations were held in Baćin, near Hrvatska Dubica, to mark the 35th anniversary of one of the largest war crimes against Croatian civilians during the Homeland War. On October 21, 1991, members of Serbian paramilitary formations executed 56 Croatian civilians, mostly elderly and vulnerable individuals, at the Skelište site.
The victims' remains were exhumed in 1997, though nine victims remain unidentified. The Baćin mass grave is noted as the second largest discovered during the Homeland War, following Ovčara.
During the ceremony, officials including Zlatan Bašić, representative of the Croatian Ministry of Croatian Veterans, emphasized that searching for the missing remains a top priority. Ružica Karagić, Mayor of Hrvatska Dubica, stressed the importance of preserving historical truth for future generations to prevent such history from repeating.
