Baião acquires abandoned neighborhood for housing rehabilitation

The municipality of Baião in the Porto district has acquired the Bairro de Frende, an area abandoned for three decades, for 150,000 euros. The local government intends to rehabilitate the site as part of its Local Housing Strategy 2027-2032 to increase the availability of housing in the region.

Mayor Ana Raquel Azevedo stated that the project aims to revitalize the area, which includes the recovery of the Cine-Alvorada cinema. The municipality's broader strategy involves addressing the needs of 326 families currently identified as living in undignified conditions. The full housing strategy, which includes repurposing old schools and creating affordable rental options, could represent an investment of approximately 47 million euros by 2032.
