Baiona authorities warn of rising credit card fraud

The Guardia Civil in Baiona-Nigrán has reported a case of credit card fraud involving more than 4,000 euros. A victim reported 40 unauthorized charges made to their bank card on a recent Thursday.

Authorities have warned of a rise in this type of fraud, where criminals make small, inconspicuous charges to verify if a card is active before increasing the amounts. These crimes often stem from phishing, smishing, fake websites, or data leaks that compromise card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes.

The Guardia Civil recommends that citizens frequently review bank statements, activate transaction alerts, and never share full banking details via unsolicited calls or messages. They also advise being cautious of communications that demand urgent action to ‘verify’ an account.
