Baiona honors hotelier Ezequiel Simóns with Carabela de Oro and cultural leader Mari Luz Iglesias with Lazo de Honor
The municipal council of Baiona presented its top awards during two ceremonies. On Friday, mayor Jesús Vázquez Almuiña handed the Carabela de Oro to local hotelier Ezequiel Adolfo Simóns González. The distinction recognized Simóns’ century‑long family involvement in hospitality, his role in creating jobs, and his contributions to the town’s economic and cultural ties with sister cities.
On Saturday, the council awarded the Lazo de Honor to Mari Luz Iglesias, known as “Sita,” for her decades‑long leadership of the Hermandad de la Santa Casa de Paz y Misericordia. Iglesias was praised for preserving Baiona’s religious and cultural heritage, modernising the brotherhood, and strengthening the town’s Semana Santa celebrations. Both awards were delivered by the mayor, who highlighted the honorees’ dedication to the community and their lasting impact on Baiona’s identity.
