Baiona honors Matilde del Pilar Montaña Miranda for lifelong craft contributions

The municipality of Baiona has awarded the Lazo de Honor to Matilde del Pilar Montaña Miranda, widely known as ‘Tilducha’, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to traditional crafts and the local community.

Born in Sabarís in 1933, Montaña Miranda began knitting at the age of 12 using needles fashioned from bicycle spokes. Her passion for sewing and knitting evolved into a professional career; she trained in cutting and tailoring at age 20 and eventually managed six local businesses that employed up to 22 people.

In addition to her entrepreneurial success, she has spent the last 33 years teaching knitting at the Baiona Senior Center. During the award ceremony, Mayor Jesús Vázquez Almuiña honored her as a pioneer who represents a generation of resilient women.
