Baiso landslide: Mitigation works continue at Ca’ Lita

Continuous monitoring and mitigation efforts are underway for the massive Ca’ Lita landslide in the municipality of Baiso, located in the Reggio Emilia Apennines. The landslide, which covers an area equivalent to approximately 130 football fields and stretches nearly 2.7 kilometers, was reactivated following extreme weather events in May 2023.

Following the completion of €2.5 million in mitigation works in August, urgent consolidation interventions valued at €1.85 million are expected to be finished by the end of October. These works aim to protect the settlements of Levazzano, Corciolano, and Ca’ Lita. An additional €2 million for further consolidation and risk mitigation is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

The site is under permanent surveillance by the Regional Agency for Territorial Security and Civil Protection, utilizing GPS, drones, and laser technology. Scientific support and numerical analyses are provided by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Recently, Undersecretary for Civil Protection Manuela Rontini conducted an inspection of the site alongside local officials and technical experts.
