Baix Empordà experts call for new economic model to combat forest fires

The Xarxa de Paisatges Resilients (Resilient Landscapes Network) is calling for a new management model in Baix Empordà to combat large-scale forest fires. During a meeting in Cap Roig involving scientists, administrators, and financial experts, proponents argued that current extinction and prevention efforts are insufficient without economic reform.

Marc Palahí, director of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance, stated that the economic model must change to attract investment and maintain managed forests, rather than relying solely on public subsidies. Additionally, Marc Castellnou of the GRAF noted that firefighters cannot safely manage major fires without properly managed forest spaces. The proposed strategy involves transforming agricultural and forestry models to create value chains that foster economic activity and landscape resilience.
