Baix Llobregat transport disrupted by lightning and accidents
Severe weather and accidents have caused significant transport disruptions in the Baix Llobregat region of Spain. On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, a lightning strike near Sant Vicenç dels Horts damaged the overhead power lines on the high-speed AVE line between Madrid and Barcelona. Adif suspended circulation for approximately two hours, from 11:00 to 13:30, affecting Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo services. The incident caused delays of up to 35 minutes and impacted Rodalies commuter trains and access to Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
Simultaneously, road traffic in the region faced heavy congestion due to an accident on the AP-7 highway between El Papiol and Castellbisbal. The crash, occurring around 07:38, forced the closure of one lane heading toward Girona, causing delays for approximately one kilometer. Other major arteries, including the A-2, B-23, and C-32, also reported heavy traffic and congestion affecting commuters traveling toward Barcelona.
