Baix Penedès groups demand priority for public services and rail infrastructure

Political and civic groups in the Baix Penedès region are criticizing the Generalitat de Catalunya for failing to address a historic deficit in public investment despite significant demographic growth.

Jaume Casañas, Mayor of Cunit and deputy of the Tarragona Provincial Council, stated that the region cannot support new national-scale infrastructure projects until basic public services are updated. He highlighted that while the population has doubled, commuter rail services have remained unchanged for 30 years, and there is an urgent need for more doctors, police, and teachers.

Simultaneously, the Associació Pro Vegueria Pròpia (PVP) del Penedès has expressed opposition to the announcement of a new freight train station in the area. The association fears this project may delay the execution of the Eix Transversal Ferroviari (ETF), a long-planned rail axis intended to better connect the interior of Catalonia. They argue that prioritizing freight stations over the ETF could lead to regional saturation and imbalance.
