Baixada Santista beaches face contamination and weather alerts
The environmental agency Cetesb has classified 16 beaches in the Baixada Santista region as unfit for swimming. The city of Santos faces the most critical situation, with six out of seven monitored points failing water quality standards. Only the José Menino beach area near Rua Frederico Ozanan remains suitable for bathing. Other affected areas include São Vicente, Guarujá, Mongaguá, Praia Grande, and Itanhaém. In contrast, the municipalities of Bertioga and Peruíbe reported 100% excellence in water quality.
Simultaneously, the Civil Defense of Santos has issued alerts regarding potential storms and sea swells. Authorities are warning residents and tourists about risks such as falling trees, power outages, and dangerous maritime conditions. The Civil Defense recommends avoiding water activities and staying away from cliffs or viewpoints during heavy swells, and advises citizens to register for emergency SMS alerts via their postal code.
