Baja California authorities urge waste management to prevent flooding

The Baja California Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development (SMADS) is urging citizens to keep streets, sidewalks, and public spaces free of trash to prevent flooding. Recent rains from Storm Rachel demonstrated that accumulated waste in vacant lots, canyons, and public roads obstructed sewers and the storm drain network, causing flooding in various parts of the region.

With the El Niño phenomenon expected to increase rainfall intensity, government authorities are coordinating cleaning efforts, heavy waste removal, and the desilting of the storm drain system throughout the state. Officials noted that improper waste disposal also contributes to environmental pollution, increases fire risks in overgrown areas, and poses risks to public health and family property.
