Baja California authorities warn of risks for Laguna Salada balloon festival

Authorities in Baja California have warned that a planned mass release of approximately 3,800 Cantoya balloons at Laguna Salada lacks the necessary environmental and safety authorizations. The event, titled the ‘Magic Festival of Cantoya Lights,’ is scheduled for October 24.

The state's Secretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development (SMADS) reported that the organizers have not yet submitted a formal request, preventive report, or environmental impact statement. While the proposed location is outside the Ramsar protected site polygon, officials expressed serious concerns regarding the potential for fires due to open flames and extreme weather, as well as the environmental impact of solid waste left behind by the balloons.

In addition to environmental risks, the event would involve more than 1,000 people, requiring authorization from the State Civil Protection Coordination. The Association of Biologists of Mexicali (BIOMAC) also cautioned that any fire could damage local vegetation and wildlife habitats. SMADS is currently reviewing the project's technical and legal aspects and has stated the festival will not proceed if it is deemed a threat to the ecosystem or public safety.
