Baja California advances auditor selection and public accountability reports

Various administrative and judicial developments are occurring across Mexico, with a focus on Baja California and Sonora. In Baja California, the State Congress has advanced the selection process for the head of the State Superior Audit Office (ASEBC) for the 2026-2033 term, with six candidates qualifying for individual interviews scheduled for September 29.

In Sonora, the Superior Institute of Audit and Fiscalization (ISAF) presented results for the 2025 public accounts. Several entities, including the University of Sonora and various municipalities, were labeled as ‘reprobados’ due to unresolved observations regarding the use of public funds. Meanwhile, in Baja California, State Attorney General María Elena Andrade Ramírez reported that 580 persons remain missing following a period of 2,802 disappearance reports, and noted that 36 arrest warrants have been issued against municipal police officers.

Other regional updates include Mexicali Mayor Norma Bustamante Martínez reporting a 6% increase in municipal revenue for 2026, and Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda initiating plans to modernize worker transportation for the maquiladora industry through electromobility. Additionally, Vera Juárez Figueroa has assumed the presidency of the Mexican Association of State Electoral Counselors (AMCEE).
