Baja California legislators propose special electricity tariffs for extreme heat zones
The Baja California State Congress has approved a proposal to be sent to the Federal Congress to reform the Electricity Sector Law. The initiative, presented by Deputy Santa Alejandrina Corral Quintero, seeks to establish a Special Tariff Regime to reduce electricity costs for households in areas with extreme climates.
Under the proposal, regions experiencing average maximum temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or higher for three or more months per year would be classified as extreme heat zones. This classification would be verified through meteorological data from the National Water Commission and the National Meteorological Service. The reform aims to treat electricity consumption for refrigeration as a basic necessity linked to health, physical integrity, and quality of life.
