Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Denies Security Compromise After Audio Leak

Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda of Baja California issued a video statement saying the recently released audio recordings are manipulated and pertain only to a personal matter: the cancellation and renewal of her U.S. tourist visa in 2025. She presented a chronology of contacts with a purported adviser – initial instant‑message on 18 June 2025, phone calls on 2 and 22 August, and a meeting with a supposed agent on 15 December – and asserted she was deceived by a false “gestor”. The governor emphatically rejected any negotiation or delivery of sensitive information to foreign authorities and denied ever meeting in Panama.

She highlighted her administration’s security results, noting the detention of more than 120 priority targets and a 46 % drop in intentional homicides. The leak sparked a legal debate, with PAN senator Ricardo Anaya calling for an investigation into possible espionage, while Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said the material does not indicate criminal conduct under the Federal Penal Code.

Marina del Pilar reaffirmed her commitment to Mexico’s sovereignty and expressed willingness to cooperate with any Mexican authority to clarify the matter.
