Baja California implements El Niño flood prevention and heat alerts
Authorities in Baja California are implementing emergency measures to prepare for the El Niño phenomenon and extreme weather conditions. In Tijuana, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced a coordinated effort with the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) to clean the Tijuana River channel. The project aims to remove approximately 600,000 cubic meters of sediment, debris, and vegetation to prevent flooding during intense rains. As part of this preventive action, 64 families currently living within the riverbed will be relocated.
Simultaneously, Civil Protection has issued alerts for the region due to rising temperatures and increased wildfire risks. High heat is expected in Mexicali, San Felipe, and Tecate, with temperatures reaching up to 41°C. High winds and low humidity in coastal areas like Tijuana and Ensenada have also heightened the risk of rapid fire propagation, prompting officials to urge the public to avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution with vulnerable groups.
