U.S. Coast Guard suspends search for 11 missing after boat capsizes off Mexico

U.S. Coast Guard Ensenada maritime rescue human smuggling Baja California

The United States Coast Guard has suspended search operations for 11 people believed to be missing after a vessel capsized in international waters, approximately 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 16, following distress calls received by Coast Guard Sector San Diego.

Of the approximately 27 people reported to be on board, 16 individuals were rescued from the water. All survivors were identified as Mexican nationals and were transported to hospitals in San Diego for medical evaluation. Several survivors reportedly sustained severe injuries consistent with shark bites during the ordeal.

The search operation, which lasted approximately 89 hours, involved a coordinated effort between the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, and the Mexican Navy. Assets deployed included helicopters, aircraft, and multiple vessels, such as the USS Kingsville and the cutter Active.

Authorities noted that the vessel capsized in an area frequently used for maritime smuggling operations. While the exact cause of the shipwreck remains under investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officials have not confirmed if the missing individuals were victims of shark attacks.
