Baja California Sur Congress urges increase in school infrastructure funding
The Congress of Baja California Sur has issued an exhortation to the Mexican Chamber of Deputies and its Budget Commission to increase funding for the 'La Escuela es Nuestra' program in the 2027 federal budget.
The request follows projections of a 25.5% reduction in the program's budget, which would see funding drop from 26,832 million pesos in 2026 to 20,000 million pesos in 2027. Legislators warned that these cuts could jeopardize essential school needs, including potable water, electricity, sanitation, maintenance, and equipment.
Deputy Guadalupe Saldaña Cisneros highlighted a lack of transparency regarding the program's impact after seven years of operation, noting that there is insufficient data on which schools have resolved their deficiencies. The proposal received bipartisan support from Morena, Nueva Alianza, and PRI legislators, who emphasized the need to protect educational infrastructure in rural, indigenous, and migrant communities.
