Baja California Sur Congress urges municipalities to reduce light pollution
The Congress of Baja California Sur has issued an exhortation to the state's five municipalities—Los Cabos, La Paz, Comondú, Loreto, and Mulegé—to implement measures to prevent, reduce, and control light pollution.
Proposed actions include the gradual replacement of current public lighting with 'Full Cut-Off' technology using warm color temperatures between 2,500 and 3,000 Kelvin. The initiative also suggests regulating lighting schedules in urban and tourist areas through motion sensors and intelligent management systems, as well as incorporating responsible lighting criteria into construction licenses and public works projects.
Promoted by Deputy Erick Iván Agúndez Cervantes, the proposal aims to reduce municipal energy spending, protect local biodiversity, and improve public health. The initiative originated from the XVIII Youth Parliament 2025, specifically from a project titled 'Luz que Cuida: Mitigación Lumínica en Baja California Sur' presented by Yekina Sudeylliz Rosselliz Higuera. Legislators noted that these measures could also support astrotourism, particularly in Loreto, by preserving dark skies.
