Baja California Sur honors victims of Hurricane Liza 50 years later

The state of Baja California Sur is marking the 50th anniversary of Hurricane Liza, one of the most devastating natural disasters in the region's history. On September 30, 1976, the Category 4 hurricane passed near La Paz, causing the collapse of dams and the overflowing of the El Cajoncito stream. The disaster destroyed approximately one-third of local homes, leaving 20,000 people homeless and causing significant flooding in the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.

To commemorate the event, the Baja California Sur Congress held a solemn session to honor the victims, survivors, and rescuers. During the ceremony, officials recognized members of the Heroic Firefighters Corps who participated in the 1976 rescue efforts. As a permanent tribute, golden lettering reading “In honor of the victims of Hurricane Liza” was unveiled within the legislative building to preserve the historical memory of the tragedy.
