Baja California Sur reports highest home burglary rate in Mexico

Baja California Sur recorded the highest home burglary rate in Mexico for August 2026, according to data from the National Citizen Observatory on Security, Justice and Legality. The state reported 7.45 break-ins per 100,000 residents during that month, surpassing states such as Aguascalientes, Morelos, Colima, and Quintana Roo.

Reports to the State Attorney General’s Office indicate that between January and August 2026, there were 570 reported victims of home break-ins in the state, a slight increase from the 558 cases reported during the same period in 2025. For the first half of 2026, Baja California Sur ranked second nationally in these incidents, trailing only Aguascalientes.

Municipal data shows that La Paz had the highest rate in the state with 55.78 cases per 100,000 residents in the first six months of 2026. Other notable rates were recorded in Los Cabos (45.28), Loreto (44.73), Mulegé (44.32), and Comondú (34.01). The data suggests that crimes are often opportunity-based and concentrated in residential areas, including gated communities and vacation homes used by seasonal residents.
