Baja California Sur schools face electrical failures and parent protests

Electrical failures and infrastructure deficiencies in schools across Baja California Sur have prompted protests from parents and a response from state authorities. In Los Cabos, parents at the Estefanía Castañeda Núñez Kindergarten occupied the facility to demand solutions for persistent power issues that have lasted since the previous school year.

In La Paz, parents of students at the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Elementary School have announced they will not send their children to class until electrical repairs are made. The outages have rendered air conditioning units inoperative, making classrooms difficult to inhabit during extreme heat, with temperatures reaching between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Governor Víctor Castro Cosío has instructed school officials to report electrical issues immediately. He stated that if a school lacks the necessary conditions to operate safely, directors and supervisors must inform the community and take appropriate measures, noting that “normalcy must be imposed” rather than suspending classes across the entire state for isolated incidents.
