Başkent University students develop smart corset for spinal health

Engineering students Onur Mutiağolu and Seçkin Semih Ateşoğlu from Başkent University have developed a sensor-based smart corset designed to monitor spinal health. The system integrates biomechanical force distribution data with an AI-supported camera monitoring system to evaluate posture simultaneously.

The device utilizes pressure sensors on both sides and an accelerometer on the back to collect biomechanical measurements. These are processed via a microcontroller and combined with camera imagery to classify posture abnormalities such as kyphosis and scoliosis. This hybrid approach aims for higher accuracy and broader clinical applicability than systems relying on only one data source.

The technology allows for remote monitoring, enabling doctors and technicians to track patient data through a database application. The project aims to facilitate early diagnosis of spinal diseases, potentially reducing treatment duration, increasing patient comfort, and improving clinical workflow efficiency in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.
