Baker Mayfield and GM Jason Licht Weigh Buccaneers Franchise Tag

Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht confirmed that the franchise tag remains an option for quarterback Baker Mayfield after the player declined a contract extension and publicly voiced frustration. Licht described Mayfield as “a very fiery competitor who’s not afraid to speak his mind” and said both the team and the quarterback are “disappointed, frustrated” but still in a good place. He added that the franchise tag is a tool the team can use to retain Mayfield, despite Mayfield’s concerns about the projected $80 million cap hit that would result from applying the tag.

Licht also stated that Mayfield is “in a great place right now” and focused on having a strong season, while noting the tag could be employed as a bridge to a longer‑term deal or even a trade scenario.
