Baker Mayfield contract negotiations keep Tampa Bay Buccaneers on edge

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is in talks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over a new contract. He has set a deadline of July 30, the first day of training camp, to resolve his extension and has indicated that no further discussions will occur after camp starts. Left tackle Tristan Wirfs said Mayfield’s focus on the field has not changed, noting, “Even the first time around, it didn’t really affect him… He’s still the same guy who’s coming in here day in and day out.”

The Buccaneers have not yet reached an agreement, and Mayfield could become a free agent in 2027. NFL analyst Mike Florio suggested the Pittsburgh Steelers could be a likely destination, especially as they anticipate Aaron Rodgers’ retirement after the 2026 season.
