Baker Mayfield to return for Buccaneers against Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is set to return to the field this Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield has missed the past three games due to a dislocated right thumb, but he returned to practice this week wearing a protective glove. He stated that his thumb feels strong enough to grip and throw, though he had previously been concerned about the impact of hits.
Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed that Mayfield is ready to start, ending the recent tenure of rookie Jalon Daniels at quarterback. The Buccaneers, currently holding a 1-5 record, are looking to gain ground in the NFC South. The matchup features a familiar dynamic, as Panthers coach Dave Canales previously served as the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator and play-caller.
Mayfield has historically performed well against Carolina, holding a 6-1 record as a starter against the team. Meanwhile, the Panthers hold a 3-2 record and are led by quarterback Bryce Young.
