Baking soda and cleaning products shelf life and storage

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a versatile household staple used for leavening, cleaning, and deodorizing. While it does not become unsafe to use as it ages, its effectiveness diminishes over time. In baking, its leavening power decreases due to chemical degradation, while its cleaning capabilities weaken as it ages.

To maintain potency, baking soda should be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry place to protect it from moisture, air, and odors. Because it is hygroscopic, it readily absorbs moisture, which can lead to clumping and loss of function.

Other common household cleaning products also have specific shelf lives. Opened bleach typically lasts about six months, while liquid laundry detergent and hydrogen peroxide generally remain effective for about six months after opening. Disinfectant sprays and all-purpose cleaners often have a shelf life of one to two years.
