Baking soda and oregano mixture for odor control

Mixing baking soda with dried oregano can serve as a simple domestic method to reduce odors in small, enclosed spaces such as shoe racks, closets, trash areas, and refrigerators. Baking soda acts as a slightly alkaline substance that can react with and neutralize certain volatile acidic compounds responsible for unpleasant smells, rather than simply masking them.

Dried oregano contributes a characteristic herbal aroma to the mixture. However, this combination should not be used as a substitute for proper cleaning or as a solution for issues caused by mold, moisture, or decaying food. It is also not a proven insecticide; while oregano essential oils have shown repellent properties in controlled studies, using dried leaves in a container does not provide the same effectiveness against pests like ants or moths.
