Baking soda benefits for pesticide removal and cleaning risks
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a versatile household tool, but its use requires caution depending on the surface. While effective for cleaning, its abrasive properties can cause damage to sensitive materials. It can scratch glass, windows, and polished surfaces, and may cause uneven discoloration on aluminum and copper. On leather, it can strip natural oils, leading to dryness and cracking, while on marble, it can erode protective coatings.
In food safety, baking soda has proven effective at removing certain pesticide residues. Research from the University of Massachusetts demonstrated that soaking fruit, such as Gala apples, in a 1% baking soda solution can significantly reduce chemical presence. Specifically, tests showed that a 12-minute soak removed approximately 80% of thiabendazole, and a 15-minute soak removed 95.6% of fomesate. While more effective than plain water, this method primarily addresses surface residues rather than chemicals that have already penetrated the fruit.
