Baku State University marks 107 years amid calls for higher education reform
Baku State University (BSU) is celebrating its 107th anniversary. Established on September 1, 1919, by the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the institution was founded to ensure the nation's future through professional and educated citizens. Its first rector was Professor Vasily Ivanovich Razumovsky, and the university initially focused on history-philology and medicine.
In a separate discussion regarding the state of higher education in Azerbaijan, expert Ramin Nureliyev highlighted significant deficiencies in professional training. He noted that many universities lack sufficient practical environments, such as laboratories and production sites, which are essential for fields like mechanical or civil engineering. Nureliyev argued that current internship models often remain formal and outdated, failing to prepare students effectively for the labor market compared to European educational standards.
