Spain regional updates: tourism taxes, commercial dates, and environmental concerns

Various regional developments are impacting the Spanish tourism and commercial sectors. In the Balearic Islands, a new tourism VAT measure is expected to generate approximately 100 million euros annually, affecting over 26,000 vacation rentals. Additionally, the government has finalized the authorized commercial opening dates for 2027, selecting ten specific Sundays and holidays.

Environmental and infrastructural concerns are also surfacing. Extreme drought and high temperatures have caused significant forest stress in Mallorca and Menorca, affecting hundreds of hectares of vegetation. In Menorca, the Balada palace in Ciutadella shows signs of severe deterioration nearly 17 years after being bequeathed to the Royal House.

In other regions, tourism occupancy remains high. Ciudad Real reported nearly 80% occupancy during the Pilar holiday weekend, driven by gastronomy and wine tourism. Similarly, Asturias saw high occupancy in rural areas, though businesses noted a trend toward more cautious consumer spending despite the influx of visitors.
