Balaghat illness outbreak sparks death toll dispute

An illness outbreak in the Baiga-dominated tribal villages of Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district has led to conflicting reports regarding fatalities. The Congress party, through Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, has claimed that nine children have died due to the outbreak.

Local health authorities have provided different figures, stating that while 117 children were hospitalized, 97 have recovered and 20 remain under treatment. The administration noted that those currently hospitalized are in stable condition and out of danger. The outbreak, which has affected areas such as Kundekasa, Adori, Bondari, and Korka for approximately 40 days, involves symptoms including malaria, typhoid, measles, scabies, and nutritional deficiencies.

Medical officials have deployed 20 survey teams, 10 medical officers, and four ambulances to conduct door-to-door screenings. Blood and water samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune and an ICMR institution in Kolkata to determine the exact cause of the illnesses.
