Balance stability serves as an indicator of physical aging

A study conducted by Mayo Clinic researchers, including Kenton Kaufman, suggests that the ability to stand on one leg can serve as a significant indicator of the aging process. By monitoring healthy adults over the age of 50, scientists compared strength, gait, and balance, finding that single-leg stability was the most prominent parameter reflecting physical decline.

Researchers noted that the most significant differences were observed when standing on the non-dominant leg. While maintaining balance for 20 to 30 seconds is considered a good result, the study found that the average for individuals over 65 was approximately 11 seconds. A duration of less than five seconds may indicate an increased risk of falls.

Experts emphasize that declining balance may be one of the first signals of losing physical capabilities. Maintaining balance is crucial for preserving independence, mobility, and the ability to perform daily activities during healthy aging.
