Morning fatigue linked to breakfast choices and coffee timing

Consuming simple‑carbohydrate foods such as sugary cereals, toast with jam, or packaged pastries at breakfast can cause a rapid rise in blood glucose followed by a swift insulin‑driven drop, leading to a mid‑morning slump in energy, irritability, and hunger. The article advises pairing coffee with a balanced breakfast that includes protein, healthy fats, and fiber—examples include Greek yogurt, eggs, nuts, whole‑grain bread with avocado, or seeds—to provide a steadier release of energy and reduce the risk of a glycaemic crash. It also notes that waiting ninety minutes after waking before drinking coffee is not supported by clinical evidence, but drinking coffee on an empty stomach may cause gastritis in susceptible individuals. Drinking water upon waking is recommended to offset overnight dehydration, which can also contribute to perceived fatigue.
