Balaton nature protection faces environmental damage and public scrutiny
A significant instance of environmental damage occurred in Balatonberény, where an excavator was used to uproot a protected Natura 2000 reed bed. The Balaton-felvidék National Park Directorate confirmed that the destroyed vegetation was a first-class ecological habitat. Authorities caught the operator at the scene, who reportedly lacked the necessary permits for the intervention. The destruction covered approximately 1,000 square meters and harmed local wildlife, including the rescue of a European pond turtle.
Separately, a representative study by the 21 Research Center indicates that a majority of the public expects the state to lead the protection of Lake Balaton. According to the survey, 55 percent of respondents believe the state bears the primary responsibility for preserving the lake as a natural asset. Furthermore, 77 percent of those surveyed believe that nature conservation aspects should take precedence over economic or investor interests regarding developments along the shoreline.
