Balaton's Kékszalag Regatta Launches with Enhanced Live Streaming

The 58th edition of the Kékszalag regatta, Europe’s longest and oldest lake‑circumnavigation sailing race, set off from Lake Balaton on Thursday. Over a hundred boats and several thousand competitors gathered, including foreign entries such as Swiss crews. The Hungarian Sailing Federation moved the start line 1,600 m east to accommodate low water levels, allowing deeper‑draft vessels to compete safely.

The event featured an extensive live broadcast produced by Magyar Telekom and streamed on akeszlalag.hu and the Telekom Live YouTube channel. A dedicated team of more than 40 staff covered 72 hours of coverage using 34 cameras, including seven shore cameras, ten onboard vessel cameras, five drones, and three motorised camera boats. The network relied on a 5G Campus‑wide connection to ensure bandwidth during peak demand. Presenter Szépvölgyi István and Hungarian Sailing Academy officials discussed the technical challenges in an interview with Index.

Hungarian Sailing Federation president Gellér László emphasized the cultural importance, stating, “Kékszalag is the celebration of Hungarian sailing, uniting sport, tradition and the community on the Balaton.”
