Bald Eagle Jackie Remains in Critical Condition After Rescue Near Big Bear Lake
Internet‑famous bald eagle Jackie, one half of the widely watched Jackie‑Shadow pair, was rescued near Big Bear Lake in Southern California after disappearing for several days. She was found grounded, severely anemic and suffering kidney inflammation, and was taken to the Ojai Raptor Center for intensive care.
Veterinarians performed a life‑saving blood transfusion using blood from Spirit, an eagle at a Bakersfield zoo. Tests have ruled out lead toxicity and foreign objects, and a toxicology report for rodenticide or zinc is pending. Center manager Eliza Cameron said, “The eagle continues to perch and eat, and there is slight improvement in her energy,” but emphasized that her condition remains critical.
Jackie is now eating with assistance and showing modest energy gains, while her partner Shadow continues to care for their eaglets Sandy and Luna at the Big Bear nest. The Ojai team continues monitoring her kidney function and overall health as the livestream community follows her recovery.
