Bald eagle Jackie's death sparks backlash and scam warnings

The death of Jackie, a 14-year-old bald eagle from Big Bear Valley, California, has sparked significant online backlash against the wildlife caregivers who treated her. Jackie, who gained international fame through a viral nest livestream, died on August 10 following weeks of medical treatment. She had been rescued on July 18 after an altercation with other eagles left her grounded. Veterinarians at the Ojai Raptor Center reported she suffered from severe anemia, emaciation, and dehydration, with state wildlife officials later noting blood clots in her wing and kidney.

Following her death, staff at the Ojai Raptor Center and the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley faced harassment, including unexpected visits and messages on personal social media accounts. Some followers have questioned the timeline of her medical care and demanded more frequent updates. In response, staff have had to restrict public comments due to the unmanageable volume of inquiries.

Additionally, the Ojai Raptor Center has issued a warning regarding scams. The facility noted that unauthorized individuals are selling merchandise featuring Jackie’s image, some falsely claiming to benefit the center. The center clarified that it does not sell merchandise featuring individual patients.
