Bald Eagles Jackie and Shadow Secure $10 Million Habitat Purchase in Big Bear Valley

Friends of Big Bear Valley announced that a $10 million fundraising effort, including a $5.5 million gift from Anna and Greg Brockman (co‑founder of OpenAI), has met its goal to buy the Moon Camp property in the San Bernardino Mountains. The purchase, to be completed by the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust, blocks a planned development of 50 custom homes and a marina, preserving the forest habitat that supports the celebrity bald eagles Jackie and Shadow.

Jackie, the widely watched nest‑cam eagle, is currently in critical condition after a recent attack. She received a life‑saving blood transfusion and is being treated at the Ojai Raptor Center. Local residents hope she will recover and return to the nest, while the newly protected land ensures a safe home for both eagles.
