British Columbia wildfires: 64 fires out of control following thunderstorms
British Columbia is facing a significant wildfire surge, with 184 active wildfires reported. Of these, 64 are currently out of control, including four major blazes. The BC Wildfire Service attributes the recent spike to weekend thunderstorms that sparked 63 new fires within a 24-hour period.
In the Summerland area, the Bald Range wildfire continues to pose a threat, with eight evacuation orders and 13 evacuation alerts in effect. While recent rainfall and lower temperatures provided temporary relief to fire activity, officials warn that rising temperatures could increase intensity. The Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Summerland reported partial damage from the Bald Range fire, losing several buildings and volunteer quarters, though aquatic enclosures remained intact.
Other notable activity includes four out-of-control fires located between the Coquihalla Highway, Highway 3, and Highway 5A, the largest being a 12.17-hectare blaze near Lawless Creek Forest Service Road. In Fort St. James, two fires were successfully declared out following swift suppression efforts.
