Bald Range wildfire destroys 150 structures near Summerland FAST-MOVING

The Bald Range wildfire, covering approximately 21,391 hectares, continues to impact the Summerland region of British Columbia. The blaze has destroyed or damaged an estimated 150 structures, including roughly 40 in Summerland proper. Firefighting efforts are currently focused on the northwestern flank near the Princeton-Summerland Road corridor, where active fire behaviour persists.

The wildfire has forced the evacuation of nearly 20,000 people. Among the significant losses is the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society facility in Summerland, which was completely destroyed. Co-founders Eva Hartmann and Jonathan Laumer reported that they were forced to evacuate quickly, leaving behind all material possessions, including their private residence. Animals not yet ready for release were transferred to the BC Wildfire Park in Kamloops.

In response to the crisis, FortisBC has announced that residents under evacuation orders for five or more consecutive days will receive automatic bill credits to offset utility charges. While some evacuation orders have been downgraded to alerts, nine orders and 14 alerts remain in effect.
