Bald Range wildfire: Evacuation orders downgraded near Summerland
The Bald Range wildfire, which covers approximately 19,891 hectares, continues to be a major focus for firefighting efforts near Summerland. BC Wildfire Service crews, supported by roughly 300 firefighters and 15 helicopters, are working to contain the blaze. While firefighters have successfully held the fire behind control lines along Okanagan Lake and Highway 97, the northwestern portion of the fire remains a priority as it moves into more traditional wildland forest topography.
As a result of successful suppression efforts, several evacuation orders have been downgraded to alerts. Residents in the Trout Creek neighbourhood and properties east of Highway 97, south of McDougald Road, are being allowed to return home in a staged re-entry. Highway 97 has also reopened to all traffic between Penticton and Peachland, though drivers are advised to remain cautious due to potential smoke and heavy equipment on the road.
Despite these developments, new evacuation alerts have been issued for properties in Area H on the Princeton-Summerland Road and for Greata Ranch South. Officials indicate that crews will continue working in forested areas for the foreseeable future to manage hot spots and build contingency guards.
