British Columbia wildfire restrictions and evacuation orders ease
Wildfire conditions in British Columbia are shifting as authorities ease several restrictions and downgrade emergency orders.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has rescinded evacuation orders and alerts for approximately 214 addresses affected by the Pear Lake wildfire, which has burned roughly 166,117 hectares. An evacuation alert remains in place for four properties near the French Bar Creek wildfire.
In Summerland, the Bald Range wildfire is now considered under control after burning 25,163 hectares. Most evacuation orders for the district have been lifted, allowing residents to return home 25 days after the fire began on August 7.
Regarding fire prohibitions, the BC Wildfire Service is lifting Category 1 campfire bans across several regions. In the Coastal Fire Centre, including Vancouver Island and the South Coast, Category 1 restrictions will be lifted on September 3. The Kamloops Fire Centre and Cariboo Fire Centre will also permit Category 1 campfires starting September 3. Additionally, the Southeast Fire Centre rescinded its Category 1 prohibition effective September 1.
Despite these changes, Category 2 and Category 3 open-fire prohibitions remain in effect for most areas. Certain activities, such as the use of fireworks, burn barrels, and binary exploding targets, remain prohibited.
