Baleares faces calls for administrative reform and rising healthcare privatization
The Confederation of Business Associations of the Balearic Islands (CAEB) has called for increased administrative agility to support strategic projects and economic transformation in the archipelago. During a meeting in Madrid, CAEB President Carmen Planas emphasized the need for improved public-private collaboration to boost competitiveness, reduce bureaucracy, and facilitate access to European funds.
Separately, a report from the Federation of Associations for the Defense of Public Health (FADSP) indicates that the Balearic Islands are experiencing an acceleration in healthcare privatization. The report places the region alongside Catalonia as having the second-highest degree of privatization in Spain, following Madrid.
Data shows that spending on private healthcare contracts in the Balearic Islands increased by 165% between 2010 and 2026, significantly outpacing the 46% growth in the overall public health budget. Planned spending for private healthcare in 2026 is estimated at 228 million euros, up from 86 million euros in 2010. Currently, the private sector manages approximately 35% of hospital beds and 33% of high-technology diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in the region.
