Balearic driver jailed pending trial for fatal cyclist collision

A 27‑year‑old driver was ordered into provisional prison by a court in Inca after being accused of killing an 84‑year‑old cyclist on the Ma‑2200 road near Pollença, Balearic Islands. The incident occurred at 07:55 on a Monday when the driver, pulling a fairground trailer, overtook the cyclist and, while attempting to return to his lane, struck the cyclist, who was thrown into a ditch and later died despite emergency resuscitation attempts. The driver fled the scene and was arrested a few hours later following an investigation by the Guardia Civil traffic unit, which identified the vehicle through witness testimony and trailer registration. He faces charges of reckless homicide and failure to render assistance, with potential penalties of up to four years in prison and a driving ban of one to six years.
