Balearic Government appeals migrant minor protection decree

The Balearic Government has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against a Royal Decree that updates the capacity of the protection system for unaccompanied migrant minors. The new decree sets the reference number of places for the Balearic Islands at 434, an increase from the previous 406.

Government spokesperson Antoni Costa stated that the criteria used to determine these capacities are not “sufficiently justified” and argued that the current regulations provide favorable treatment to some communities while disadvantaging others. The regional executive also challenges the State's authority to establish protection and guardianship capacities for minors through a royal decree, asserting that the protection of minors is an exclusive competence of the autonomous communities.
