Balearic Government to Challenge Minor Transfer Plans from Ceuta

The Balearic regional government, led by President Marga Prohens, said it will file an appeal before Spain’s Supreme Court against any allocation of unaccompanied minors from Ceuta to the islands. The move follows a similar strategy used with the Canary Islands after the central government’s decree expanded the capacity for tutela of minors from 406 to 434. Prohens argues the islands lack space because of a steady flow of arrivals via the Algerian route, noting that the Balearic region currently shelters only four minors from previous transfers.

Ceuta, where more than 800 minors are reported to be in need of care, is set for a new redistribution. Government delegate in Ceuta Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano warned that refusal by autonomous communities could trigger action by the prosecutor’s office, stating “Evidently, the law must be complied with.” Prohens added, “We have no capacity and we will appeal whenever they try.”
